Cave exploration

The caves of Romania are nature’s special creations, which let themselves be admired by tourists and also researched by speleologists. Romania has a wide network of caves – about 11.000 – among which many are arranged to be visited, and others exclusively booked for the specialists.

The most important, known and visited caves in Romania are: Peştera Muierilor (The Women’s Cave), Peştera Urşilor (The Bears’ Cave), Gheţarul Scărişoara (Scarisoara Glacier), Cormarnic Cave and Popovăţ Cave, spread in different regions of the country. Each of them is worthy of a visit, mainly due to their unique and exquisite underground scenery.

The longest cave in Romania is the Wind Cave (Pădurea Craiului Mountains): 50 km. The biggest negative drop is recorded in the Aven under Coltii Grindului (The Sand Bank’s Fangs) (Piatra Craiului Massif), 540 m, and the greatest positive edrop in Sura Mare Cave (Sureanu Mountains), 405 m.

In Romania there are a few dozen salt caves, the biggest being 3.234 meters long with a 42 m drop. It is crossed by two salty springs and offers, among other attractions of scientific interest, a special range of extremely colorful formations. It is situated at Mânzălesti, in Buzău Mountains, and it came first in the world for its length for many years.
